Udyam Registration for MSMEs: Eligibility, Process, and Benefits
Complete guide to Udyam Registration for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises — turnover and investment thresholds, how to register on udyamregistration.gov.in, and the statutory benefits available to registered MSMEs.
What Is Udyam Registration?
Udyam Registration is the official government recognition for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) under the MSMED Act 2006, as amended by the MSMED Amendment Act 2020. The registration is issued free of charge through the Udyam Registration portal (udyamregistration.gov.in) and replaces the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM).
MSME Classification (Effective 1 July 2020)
Classification is based on both annual turnover and investment in plant and machinery/equipment:
| Category | Investment in Plant & Machinery/Equipment | Annual Turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | ≤ ₹1 Crore | ≤ ₹5 Crore |
| Small | ≤ ₹10 Crore | ≤ ₹50 Crore |
| Medium | ≤ ₹50 Crore | ≤ ₹250 Crore |
Note: If either criterion exceeds the limit for a category, the enterprise is classified in the next higher category. Both criteria must be within the limits to qualify.
Who Can Register?
- Proprietorships, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), Partnership Firms, LLPs, Private Limited Companies, Public Limited Companies, Producer Companies, Co-operative Societies, and trusts — provided they are engaged in manufacturing, production, processing, or preservation of goods, or service activities
- Retail and wholesale trade are NOT included in the MSMED Act definition; they are not eligible for Udyam Registration
Registration Process
Step 1: Visit udyamregistration.gov.in — the official portal (free; no fees)
Step 2: Enter Aadhaar number of proprietor/partner/director (PAN + GST are auto-fetched from GSTN and IT databases for registered businesses)
Step 3: Verify via OTP and fill in enterprise details:
- Name and type of organisation
- Location of plant / office
- Bank account details
- Main activity (Manufacturing or Services)
- NIC codes for activities
Step 4: Submit — you receive the Udyam Registration Number (format: UDYAM-XX-00-0000000) and Udyam Registration Certificate immediately.
The process is self-certified — no inspection, no document uploads required at the time of registration.

Updating and Cancellation
Udyam Registration must be updated annually with PAN-linked turnover data. If the enterprise outgrows the MSME threshold, it must update and may lose MSME status for that year.
Note: Udyam Registration is free. Beware of third-party websites charging fees for Udyam Registration — the official portal is udyamregistration.gov.in. All thresholds are as of the MSMED Amendment 2020 — verify for current notifications.
